The Medieval Monasteries of Yorkshire

This interactive flash map charts the development of monastic establishments across medieval Yorkshire. I created it during my final year at architecture school as part of an investigation into the Monastic Tradition in Yorkshire. The whole span of time from the founding of St Mary's Abbey in York in 1069 to the end of the dissolution in 1541 can be viewed as an unfolding animation or any specific year can be selected to view. It enables the settlements to be filtered by monastic order, gender, and by the extent of any archaeological remains. Contextual information such as topography and rivers can also be switched on and off.
