What To Look Out For
As leading providers of Essex roller shutter garage doors, we’ve seen our fair share of damage to garages over the years. Here are some of the most common complaints:
Weather Damage
Weather damage is one of the most common causes of problems in a garage. Whether you live in an area where the climate is mild, or you deal with adverse weather conditions regularly, it can all cause damage to your garage. General wear and tear will have an impact over the years, but if there is a hole in the roof this could lead to leaks, and in the event of severe rain, flooding. So be sure to keep on top of your garage maintenance!
Failed Insulation
Insulation failure is another issue that is a big contributor to garage problems. Things like a cracked sealant on your garage walls or frayed weatherstripping around your garage windows and doors can leave the interior of your garage vulnerable to water and cold. These will cause damp issues over time – which you may not notice until the problem has taken hold. So it pays to pay close attention to the state of the insulation in your garage.
Roof Weight
Roof weight can also seriously affect the overall wellbeing of a garage. If wall reinforcement hasn’t been carried out properly, the weight of the roof can put too much pressure on your garage walls and cause them to curve. If a garage starts bowing under the weight of its own roof, then that is a problem that needs to be addressed immediately. However, it can be fixed with concrete jacketing. This involves strengthening your garage walls with extra layers of concrete, increasing their thickness and ability to bear weight.
Damage To The Garage Door
Damage to the garage door is another common complaint that we see here at Home Secure Solutions. Whether we are called in to repair or replace the door in question, these are some of the issues we spot most frequently:
- Misaligned Tracks: anything from the constant use of the garage door or bowing walls can shift your garage door tracks out of place. This is a really common problem, and we will be able to fix it in no time at all. The doors that we install are also designed to be able to withstand plenty of daily use.
- Broken Cables Or Springs: it’s very easy for cables to become distorted, brittle and eventually break after lots of everyday use. We recommend checking yours regularly to see if there are any signs of fraying, wear and tear or decay. If there is, have them replaced. Broken springs can also be replaced at relatively little expense.
Electrical Issues: most of today’s roller shutter garage doors are electric, and this can bring its own unique problems – the majority of which can be resolved easily. It may be as simple as changing the batteries or performing a more involved repair such as replacing the photo-eye sensor.
