All puppies go through the teething process and there is no denying it is likely to be a trying time for both you and your dog. Due to the discomfort of new teeth coming through, puppies naturally want to chew things as it offers them some relief and distraction. The chewing frenzy associated with teething normally lasts about four months, beginning when your pup is about four months old and continuing through to eight months. It is a natural process all dogs need to go through but you can make it easier on both of you – and save your furniture – by giving them the right things to chew and keeping them distracted.
There are a wide range of toys available for teething puppies, ranging from frozen chew sticks that can numb the pain to soft rubber toys that are both fun and easy on the gums. Some pet stores also sell teething rings, which have tooth holes and ridges on the surface to keep your puppy’s new teeth nice and clean.
As well as giving your puppy toys to play with, it can also help to give it lots of love and attention to distract from the pain, and relieve stress by gently playing with your puppy. By reassuring it, you will also develop a strong bond, which is very important for owners and their pets in the first few months.
Finally, if toys and love cannot stop your puppy chewing table legs, you could try some soothing teething gel which soothes but also contains herbs and oils that help to reduce infection in cases where the gums have started to bleed.
