All animals and people have cells which need to be continually repaired or renewed. Unfortunately, our metabolisms and various pollutants generate ‘free radicals’ which causes damage on the cellular level. This makes it harder for the body to repair cells fast enough which can lead to cells being damaged on multiple levels including damage of the DNA within, the all important cell enzymes and the membrane. Fortunately, steps have been taken by some pet food manufacturers to ensure that dog food contains the solution: antioxidants. A pet owner naturally wants the best for their pet and antioxidants hold the key to preventing a whole host of diseases as well as premature ageing. A food with this substance in it could lead to a longer healthier life for any canine.
If owners are unsure which foods contain antioxidants then they should look for those that boast important vitamins such as E and C. There are other compounds which have these properties as well including selenium and beta-carotene, although these might be harder to spot. Of course the best sources will be those foods that are specially blended to contain the exact amount of antioxidants necessary to keep the pet healthy. Antioxidants play a vital role in pets of all ages, especially those that are young and those that are old. Foods that contain this substance will support the growth of the immune system and will maintain it in those older dogs which could lead to a longer, healthier life.
