How To Pick The Best Wine Glass

Well, I am partly joking here, but wine in plastic cups on vacations always tastes delicious. Although, it’s also true that an elegant, comfortable and good design glass makes the experience of wine much more pleasant.

For many years, our everyday glass has been Spiegelau Burgandy, with which, we are so comfortable that it seems like an old shoe. But, everybody needs new shoes from time to time right? That’s why I decided to conduct a broad search of new everyday glass. While, there are different types of glasses available in the market for different kinds of wine, flutes and sparklers. for instance, small glasses for dessert wine and some boasts which deliver specific wines with specific taste buds.

Everyone needs a good, solid everyday wine glass designs for the use of both red and white, you know the kind you can just reflexively pick up when you come home after a long day. Here are the parameters I kept in mind while searching for perfect everyday wine glass:

Twenty Ounces: I eliminated any glass that was less than 20 ounces. I like to have large bowls in which my small pour of wine has plenty of room to breathe and I can swirl & swish my heart’s content.

Clear Glass: I preferred thin glass instead of thick because I like to taste the wine not the glass. In addition, I want to see my wine and thick stemware can get heavy.

Long Stem to Hold It Comfortably: Yeah, those stem less tumblers we see in restaurants are fun for a change of pace, but I would suggest not using them as everyday glasses.

$15 or less: In my search for perfect everyday glass, the ones I liked were $12 or less and many of them were below $10. I didn’t want to spend too much on everyday glasses because I didn’t  wanted to worry about breaking them. A fine everyday glass is like a great movie music which doesn’t demand attention and enhance the mood and action at each moment. I am happy to say that my five favorites came from different manufacturers and different stores. The reasons I liked them is explained below, but I can tell you that I am quite fond of all of them and happy to own them as a part of my household.

Choice #1: Schott Zwiesel ‘Tritun Cru Classic’ Bordeaux:  It’s deceptive and big yet doesn’t feel big. Great balance and all wines seemed a little bit more special in this glass. A Great choice for swirling and sniffing.

Choice #2: Crate & Barrel ‘Elite’ Chardonnay: The shape and feel reminded me of restaurants in Italy, which is a good sign. Although, not thin and elegant as others but it surely is generous, well-designed and clearly durable.

Choice #3: Robert Mondavi by Waterford Bordeaux: Wine swirls beautifully in this piece of art and open ups so nicely. It looks much like the Tritan, but a little taller and a bit heavy compared to it. But, still it’s a real winner.

Riedel ‘Vivant’ Bordeaux: A classic wine glass looks like elegant, tall and all purpose shape. A lovely glass which doesn’t call attention to itself and allows wine to show well. Comfortable, easy and one of my top favorites.

Riedel ‘Wine Collection’ Pinot-Nebbiolo: It’s pretty beveled stem, which I often dislike, but it’s nicely big at the bottom with a good curve at top which helps aromas to concentrate well.

Final Thoughts: I had placed 11 different types of glasses on the table and studied them for several days with variety of white and red wines. I was searching for something good, one that felt comfortable for most of us with nice balance and some elegance to enjoy our wine, and these are the best from my perspective and would recommend to give any of them a quick shot.
