There are many different pesticides that can harm animals, from those used by farmers to cultivate crops to those used by gamekeepers to kill or harm certain birds of prey that may have been causing them problems.
However, it is not always obvious whether or not animals in your area are at risk of ingesting such pesticides and since few owners will want to keep their pet in at all times, almost any animal could be at serious risk.
What makes it harder to judge is the fact that many of these pesticides are actually illegal and, as such, there will be no warnings to let owners know that such substances are being used in the area.
Those living in urban and suburban areas are often safe, but even those with gardens that back onto green belt farmland may find that the likes of cats, dogs and even rabbits can end up ill or worse if they are exposed to the certain types of pesticide. For those in rural areas, there may be even more risk of such issues, and few ways to protect pets from these dangers.
Speaking to local farmers or gamekeepers may be one good approach, as they may be able to suggest areas in which your pets may be at risk. It is also wise to make sure that you feed any pet regularly and use pet food that keeps them feeling full for as long as possible so they do not graze whilst they are out and about.
