Keeping dogs safe

Owners tend to get very attached to their dogs, meaning they are keen to protect them from harm.

There are a few basic principles that people can bear in mind to help keep these pets out of danger. For example, it’s important for owners to ensure their gardens are escape proof if they let the creatures out without a lead. Most larger dogs can jump or climb over fences that are under two metres high.

Meanwhile, when they are out for walks with their dogs and they are near roads or livestock, they should keep the animals on a short lead that doesn’t extend.

In the home, it’s vital that all medicines, cleaning products and other potentially hazardous substances are kept locked away. Dogs are curious and they can get themselves into a lot of trouble very quickly this way.

People should also note that certain human foods are poisonous to dogs, including chocolate, cocoa powder, raisins, grapes and macadamia nuts.

When travelling in the car with their pets, owners should use a special car harness, crate or fitted case and the animals shouldn’t be able to hang their heads out of open windows. Also, people should never leave their dog in a warm or hot car, even with the windows open.

In addition, the creatures shouldn’t be left alone tied up outside shops. There is always a risk that they will be stolen.
